“Landscapes in Different Forms”
Original Artwork by Matthew C. Waite
Matthew C. Waite, BA, MA, is a professional artist who uses mixed media to create a sustainable practice from found objects and natural materials. He is interested in the intersection of landscapes and the abstract. Through his work, he encourages the audience to actively challenge their assumptions about how they engage with their landscape, the natural world, and the everyday mundane. Matthew also uses art as a meditative healing method and a tool for communication.
Matthew has taught adjunct art courses at Anna Maria College and was chosen to be the artist in residence at the Eagle Hill School STAR program in Hardwick, MA. Currently, Matthew has been working as an art instructor at Muse Paintbar in Marlborough, MA. In addition, he has been featured in several galleries and art exhibitions, including: 2025 Love & Heartbreak: A Duality, Bushwick Gallery, Brooklyn, NY with publication; 2025 14th Abstract Juried Art Competition, Taravana, Finalist Award; 2025 11th Landscape Juried Art Competition, Taravana, Honorable Mention.
Matthew’s current interests include teaching art on all levels, participating in gallery shows, creating commissioned works for individual clients, and painting detailed landscapes and abstract works using a meditative technique he calls Reductive Painting.
Abstract Technique
Reductive Painting is a technique Matthew created during his graduate program at
Anna Maria College, where he studied Integrated Media Arts. This technique requires
repetitively adding/removing layers of paint and incorporating unconventional materials
such as sand, road debris, dirt, pine needles, etc., to add texture and depth to the
composition of each piece.
Exhibit Description
Landscapes in Different Forms is an exhibition that focuses on the wide range of styles,
media, and narratives that Matthew enjoys painting. This show represents some of his
favorite creations. Matthew’s inspiration for these pieces ranges from hiking in the
Swiss Alps to daily interactions with his local landscapes.
