A Posthumous Exhibit of George Ludway’s Work

In July we welcome the artwork of George Ludway.
Enjoy a curated collection of original watercolors that George left to his nieces and nephews, and peek at a few of his cartoons.
About the Artist
George Ludway was a cartoonist and watercolor artist in Grand River, Ohio. He was a full-time artist, who after serving his country as a pilot during WW II, returned home to practice and refine his talent as an artist.
For many years after the war he made his living by creating and selling cartoons to magazines like Field and Stream and The New Yorker, to name a couple.
At seventy-five years old he decided to begin making watercolor paintings. His nickname was “Shanty” because he loved to make paintings of small shanties around Lake Erie. He was self-taught and created works until he was eighty-six years old, when he passed. If you have ever been in North Eastern Ohio along Lake Erie you will relate to his paintings done in that area.

About the Exhibitor
A Note from Vern
I’m Vern McClish, a current resident of Spencer.
I’m from a family of artists. My four uncles and mother were all artists in different mediums. My mother was a librarian and an was amazing charcoal artist, who gave up her art to raise and support my two sisters and me. After the war, my father worked as an appliance repair man at a small retail store. He was an avid photographer who loved taking pictures of our family and friends. He always had to photograph anyone that any of us dated when we were young, mostly embarrassing us. Those 35 Kodachrome slides are forever memories. My older sister Vernita is a New York Artist, working as a performance artist and collage maker, currently concentrating on recycling. I am a photographer.
I hope that you enjoy George’s work. I am very pleased to share a small collection of his creations. I wish he were here to meet each of you.
