“Photographs from the Early Space Age”
Collected and Curated by Richard Maurer
“When I was a student at the University of Texas at Austin in the early 1970s, I followed the Apollo program with intense curiosity. That interest eventually led me to the office of a geology professor who—as luck would have it—served as a NASA consultant and had an extensive archive of photographs, maps, and planning documents from the lunar missions. He granted me unrestricted access to this material. Visiting his hoard was like going to the Moon!
From that collection, I went on to curate a Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibit that toured the United States from 1978 to 1981, followed by a more expansive exhibition of planetary photography shown in New York City and London. The images presented here date from that formative period. They mark the beginning of what became, for me, a serendipitous career devoted to exhibitions, books, and other media—many centered on the Moon, the planets, and the wider universe beyond.”
